Otago Southland Marine Biology Workshop

Mikayla Preston and Caitlyn Petrie —

Last term students were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to go to a marine biology workshop at Quarantine Island.

We were put into groups, where we each had a topic to investigate. Our two groups focused on plastics and microplastics in our marine environment, and the distribution of the purple common shore crab. With our studies, we dissected crabs, sea stars and sharks. We also learnt a lot on climate change and how it will affect marine life and us. From this opportunity we’ve gained many skills that a normal classroom experience wouldn’t give us. We opened up our minds to new challenges and learnt strategies to support our thinking across all subjects.

Taking part in this program has inspired us to go further with our love for science. We made so many new friends from all over Otago and Southland and gained a lot of knowledge about the marine environment. It was an amazing opportunity that we will always remember.

Thank you to everyone who made it possible for us to go.

We hope to go back next year.
