Spamalot, the Queen’s and King’s musical for this year, is shaping up to be a great show. The students and staff involved have been putting in some long hours at rehearsals and are now looking forward to the performances starting on Thursday 27th June. The show is on Thursday and Friday night and finishes with a matinee performance on both Saturday and Sunday. You can book your tickets through the King’s High School office.

Over the last two weeks it has been fantastic to know that many groups and individuals have risen to the challenge of performing and competing publicly. Congratulations to Justyce Toeke who won a Young Enterprise competition that will see her travel to Argentina in the upcoming school holidays to a Business Forum. In the Pasifika Voices Speech Competition, the five Queen’s speakers all spoke well, and a special mention must go to Tiara Nafatali who won the Senior Competition and to Lani Luafitu who was runner up in the Junior Section. Today we have two students speaking in the Ngā Manu Kōrero Speech Competition and we wish them every success. Well done to the Madrigals who performed in the Big Sing and to Tāwhaki  for making it through to the Otago Regional Final for Rockquest. We also had students compete in the Ethics Olympiad, the Special Olympics Football Competition, Otago Swimming Championships and the Otago Secondary Schools Netball tournament over the last week.

Year 12 and 13 students have had the opportunity to take part in the Loves-me-Not Programme; a one-day workshop which is run by the New Zealand Police. This is a ‘whole-school approach’ to prevent abusive behaviour in relationships. It is based on a student inquiry learning process, where students take action (personal action, effective bystander action and community action) to prevent harm from relationship abuse. This programme is part of our school wide plan in giving students both information and the opportunity to learn about and discuss issues that are relevant to them. For our Year 10 students there is an upcoming workshop titled ‘Self-defence’. This workshop covers basic physical and verbal techniques for keeping themselves safe. The girls will learn to think and act confidently, to be more aware of their safety,  how to be safe on-line and to seek support if needed.

As always, you are welcome to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
