Ethics Olympiad

Amberly Orr (Year 13) —

Last Friday, two teams of students competed in the 2021 Ethics Olympiad where we discussed ethical dilemmas with other schools across New Zealand.

This usually occurs in Christchurch but was held over Zoom this year. The two teams of five students included girls from Years 11 - 13 who had been working for months with coaches, Jack and Seth, from the University of Otago, learning about different ethical theories and how each of these applied to the different cases we studied. We all enjoyed getting to discuss the ethics behind different industries, trades and systems in the world and creating a better understanding of the world around us. This experience was one that none of us had done before and was a great opportunity to try something new. We were extremely lucky to have our coaches visit us weekly to work with us and we have definitely all learned a lot from this.
