Stunning Stewart Island

Stewart Island Campers —

The first trip to take off for the Year 10s was the Stewart Island trip - a new one for 2022.

On Monday 28 Nov, 16 students and three staff headed off for a five day camp. Day One saw us tiki-touring through the Catlins - stopping at the Nugget Point Lighthouse, Surat Bay for Sea Lion viewing, and the Purakaunui Waterfalls. Our accommodation was a quirky backpackers (Bluff Lodge Backpackers) where the wonderful host Kay made us feel very welcome.

On Tuesday morning we rose to catch the ferry to Stewart Island - thankfully we had a smooth crossing. Tuesday afternoon we enjoyed kayaking with Bill and Phil and a short hike. Penguin counting with SIRCET meant we had a very late night.

Wednesday was a big walking day - ferry to Port William, Mrs Rogers, and some students braved the water at Maori Beach. With motivation draining, Mrs Finnie organised a taxi to pick us up and take us the last 4kms back to the township from Lee Bay. The local policeman also offered to ferry some students back.

Our adventure continued on Thursday with an Ulva Island independent exploration and fishing with Mrs McKinley - three fish were caught with one blue cod being a 'keeper'.

On Friday we all arrived back at school totally exhausted. Thank you to the staff who were involved - Mrs Finnie, Mrs Rogers and Mrs McKinley without you this camp could not have happened.
