Surfing Success

Tash Civil —

During the holidays two major surfing competitions took place. The Canterbury Women’s Champs were held at New Brighton Beach in Christchurch and the South Island Surf Champs were held in Dunedin.

At the Canterbury Women’s Champs Anika Ayson and Jaya Reardon both surfed really well in the small, yet clean waves that were on offer. Anika took first place in the Under 16 division and third in the Under 20. Jaya claimed third place in the Under 16 division. Teacher Tash Civil also competed and took out the 30+ divisions for both the shortboard and longboard. She also came 4th in the Open division.

Over the Easter weekend, the South Island Surf Champs were held in Dunedin. Unlike past events, the surf was really small which does not typically suit Dunedin surfers! But, as usual the girls were fierce competitors and achieved some fantastic results. Taya Morrison surfed really well but was unlucky not to progress to the finals. Jaya Reardon just needed a good wave to show her strong backhand attack, but the inconsistent conditions left her chasing a small score to progress into the finals. Anika surfed well all weekend, styling her way into the Under 16 final. She took down one of the most in form surfers in the country this year, but just missed out on first place, coming in a close second. Ex-girl Shani Ayson was also in great form over the weekend winning the hotly contested Under 20 division. She also smashed it in the Open Women’s division, placing third. Tash Civil competed again, placing second in the Open and 30+ women's divisions.
