Envirogroup in Action: Beach Clean up for Sea Week and Climate Change Strike

Matthew Sherborne —

On Saturday 2nd March, Queen’s Envirogroup attended a beach clean up at St Kilda Beach as part of Sea Week 2019.

This year Sea Week ran from Saturday 2nd - Sunday 10th March. We spent 2 hours climbing the sand dunes and walking along the beach collecting rubbish.  Saturday was a good opportunity for the group to get involved in our community and learn about the impacts we are having on the environment and sea life. Unfortunately, each group managed to fill a big white sack of rubbish pulled from the dunes and beach.

On Friday the 15th March students from the Envirogroup represented Queen’s High at the Climate Change strike. Students marched down George St to the Octagon where they chanted, sang and listened to speakers voicing their concerns about climate change and the impacts of this on the world. This was a powerful event with many students being part of a protest for the first time. Many members of the public lined George St clapping in support of the students as they marched past. The main message to politicians was to take the student voice seriously. If we do not make drastic changes to our attitude towards the environment there may not be a world habitable for future generations. In the words of the main chant on the day, “What do we want? Climate Justice! When do we want it? Now!!” Well done students. Message received loud and clear.
