OSSSA Girls' Football Tournament

Josie Abbott —

The girls competed in the OSSSA Girls' Football Tournament Sunday, Monday and Tuesday this week.

Drawing a hard pool the girls played against a well drilled Dunstan side on Sunday in what felt like Dunedin's hottest day this year. The girls kept the score even for almost 40 minutes before quickly dropping 4 goals to sadly be defeated 4-0. Monday morning the first game of the day on the turf and facing off against Otago Girls 1st XI, the girls kept their fighting spirit alive and managed to keep OGHS to a 1-0 score until deep in the second half. They managed to capitalise on some windy weather and a couple of lucky shots to take the win over us 4-0. This pushed us down into the bottom 6 where we were drawn to play South Otago High School. Having already played them in Thursdays competition we were hoping that knowing a bit of how they play would help. They knew our number too though and after 40 minutes we finished with a draw. Tuesday morning saw the girls head out against a combined KV/Bayfield team in a very wet and windy battle. The girls played exceptional football in the conditions and we managed to see Jorja Gibbons put in two great goals, Gracie Young with a battle in front of the goal and Zara Ward who took a brilliant penalty to secure a 4-2 victory!  After a wee rest we headed back to the park to play Logan Park in what turned out to be a nail biting finish to the tournament. The girls were amazing, especially against some superb Logan Park defence. Logan Park scored first but we responded with a great goal and then quickly put ourselves 2-1 up. Logan Park equalised the score by half time which put us a bit on edge because finals have to be won on points or it goes to a penalty shoot out. We played 13 minutes tied and were cautiously making some strategic changes in preparation for a shoot out, when Neve Darlington crossed a great ball to Jorja Gibbons who put it in the net. With the dying minutes Zara Ward then secured the victory with another great goal. 4-2 to us to finish 11th place and with smiles on our faces. Overall Tournament MVP was Georgia Caldwell, with shout outs to Brooke Wrigley, Chloe Wood, Zara Ward and Jorja Gibbons. Special thanks to Ms Burden and Ms Agnew for their support and help with transport and managerial services. Also special mention to our Year 13 students Georgia Caldwell, Charlotte Williams and Cassidy Ward-Toms whose last tournament it was. After what has been a unique season it was great to finish with some fun and hopefully next year we can all travel to Invercargill and do even better with the remainder of the team all returning students in 2021. Bring it on!
