Immersion Day

Noeline Burden —

Queen’s High School, Columba College and Bayfield High School collaborated and immersed their Year 12 & 13 French students in French for a day.

Making chef’s hats and crepes for their breakfast broke the ice, then in pairs they were given an hour to find and answer questions, in French of course, about some of the street art. After lunch, they practised their conversation skills and most actually recorded a conversation as part of their NCEA portfolios. Splitting into two groups they then played petanque at Queen’s Gardens or an escape board game. With students still interacting and speaking French until well after 4pm, it was deemed a success and next year’s Immersion Day is already being discussed. Thanks to the Alliance Française for the use of their club rooms.
