Summer Sport Competition

Volleyball

This term, we have ten junior and five senior volleyball teams playing in the Volleyball Otago competitions. The senior teams have a shorter season, with Monday 6 November being the final round. All the best to our Year 13 volleyballers, who will be playing their last game for our senior teams.

Touch

Three junior touch teams are in the weekly competition at the Kensington Oval. Last Wednesday, the Junior A Team played in an Invitational Tournament organised by Year 12 students from King’s High School. They played five games, defeating Columba College 3-2 in the semi-final before losing to St Hilda’s in the final. Gemma Rowcroft and Hamish Faulks, Coaches, were delighted with the team’s achievement.

Handball

With our two teams in the weekly handball competition, we expect to see competitive tendencies surface. These teams played each other and drew last week in their first game. Watch this space.

Ms Signal-Cambridge, who supports these teams, acknowledged the referees who so often do not receive the recognition they deserve. She “was really impressed by their patience with players who were new to the game. The referees communicated clearly and explained the rules simply and in a way the students were able to learn from.”

If you are on the sideline at sports games, please follow this example. If it is not appropriate to praise their officiating at the time, then a quick email to the organising body afterwards would be appreciated.

Student Success

Rugby

Congratulations to the following students for their individual rugby accolades:

Mahinārangi Maihi, Otago Māori Under 17 Girls - Forward of the Year.

Aria McFelin, Otago Māori Under 15 Girls - Most Valuable Player.

Melody Buckby, Otago Metro Under 16 Girls – Best and Fairest Player.

Rugby League

A combined Queen’s High School and St Hilda’s Collegiate School Team won the recently held 17s Girls' Tournament. As players become more accustomed to playing league, the progression is evident.

Surf Lifesaving

Over the summer, many of us go to the beach and take for granted, when swimming between the flags, that we will be safe. At least two Queen’s students have recently become Junior Surf Lifeguards and will be amongst the many who do keep us safe. Congratulations to Matilda Dunn and Claudia Haig of the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club for passing their surf lifeguard test and thank you for your future service to the beach-going community.

Equestrian

Nicole Reid, Year 12, has successfully competed in two recent equestrian events. At the Palmerston show, Nicole and her pony, Ruby, were awarded Supreme Champion Pony, after winning five of the disciplines and being second in their sixth. They also competed in an Otago dressage competition on the Taieri. Once again, this pair won all four of their events. Well done, Nicole and Ruby, on your excellent start to the season.
