Skill Net - a useful tool for parents AND young people

Lesley Signal-Cambridge —

Skill Net is a website designed to help people in Aotearoa New Zealand discover new job opportunities based on the skills they already have from existing or previous employment.

Skill Net is based on a database from the United States called O*Net. TEC is currently working on making sure that all the data is relevant to Aotearoa New Zealand. This means bringing in jobs and skills that are unique to us and teaching the system te reo Māori. This version of Skill Net is the first step. Over time you will see the localisation and language grow and change.

This site can also be used with young people. It can aid them in identifying their skills in order to broaden their ideas about what other opportunities might come from their current career ideas. It will help them recognise the transferrable skills they already have from part-time work, as well as those skills that they can develop through different career options.

The programme finds career ideas, based on the mahi you have done in the past. This tool compares the skills and experience for the jobs you've had with hundreds of other careers and makes links to new fields you may be qualified for and interested in.
