Helping others is a wonderful way to make a positive impact in the lives of others and contribute to our communities in a meaningful way. The good news is that it has benefits for everyone. By giving our time, our energy, and resources we can build connections and foster relationships with those around us. This service also allows us to cultivate a sense of empathy and compassion, as we become more aware of the needs of others. Also, engaging in service can boost our own mental health and wellbeing, as acts of kindness and generosity can lead to increased happiness and fulfilment.
During the last two weeks alone, there were so many different events happening that involved people giving of their service to support both school and our community. People gave their time, skills and/or resources for the benefit of others. We had students collecting for the Child Cancer Foundation, helping with the South Dunedin Festival, working in the library, visiting a rest home (their visit was enjoyed by all they have been invited back), coaching other students in a variety of activities and much much more. Community members and staff are also involved in so many of these activities. The Volleyball team, for example, could not have gained the result they did without the work and support of Madi and Ernie Mather and Whaea Cherie. To all the parents, whānau, community members, students and staff who give up their time to make activities and events happen for the good of us all, thank you.
Our Year 13 House Leaders continue to build on the house spirit generated at Athletics Day by getting their houses ready for the ‘House Haka’ at the end of this term. The House Leaders are encouraging every member of their house to participate, staff included. Activities like this build whanaungatanga and particularly help our new students build a sense of belonging to the school.
It was great to see the many students and their whānau who took the opportunity to meet with teachers last night in person as well as a thank you to the many who took the opportunity to hold their interview online. I trust you had good learning conversations about where your daughter is at and the next steps needed for continued progress.
By the end of this term each of your daughter’s teachers will have written a comment about the work they have been doing in their subject and have posted grades or progress grades for the work that has been completed. You can access these comments via the Parent Portal. I ask you to take the time to read through these comments with your daughter. Some possible questions to use as discussion starters with her are:
· What has gone well over the first half of the year?
· What will you do to keep challenging yourself?
· Have you given your best and worked hard in each class?
· Do you need to make any changes next term for you to get the best results you can?
Also, a reminder that school is closed for instruction on Monday as we observe the Otago Anniversary Day Public Holiday.
As always you are welcome to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Ngā mihi
