Girls’ Shed Design Group - Development workshop

Executive Secretary - Sharon/Jo —

Zolna Murray, the Design Manager at Naylor Love, and an architect of more than 30 years experience, spent the afternoon of Thursday 20 May at school, working with students who have contributed designs for the Girl’s Shed, and/or have an interest in architecture and design.

When Zolna first visited the school she was impressed to note that our students use ArchiCad to design, and noted that she viewed this as the best package available and that it was a programme used widely in the Architectural Industry. She stated that the girls were developing work-ready skills by using this package.

Today our students were introduced to some exciting and useful tools and sites, to support their planning efforts. Zolna also introduced the girls to concepts around structural demands, costing, quantity estimation, and planning requirements. Referring to the girls’ plans, the group discussed and considered the factors that underpin good planning and design concepts.

Mr McMillan is supporting the girls as they work on revising and polishing their designs for the Girls’ Shed - in light of what they have learnt today. Zolna will return in a month to view the finalised plans submitted by our students, for final judging and decision making. This is an exciting time - as we are planning on beginning the build of the Shed in Term 3.
