Year 10 Rocket Day

Year 10 —

This year, Year 10 students have been doing a cross-curricular project based on the movie Hidden Figures. As a finale the girls had the opportunity to create their own rockets and blast them into the air using different types of boosters.

Prior to rocket day students watched the movie Hidden Figures in Humanities and learnt about the black women that helped NASA with the launching of rockets. It looked at the issues of the time and what the women had to deal with. In Maths students looked at trajectories, distance and speed. In science classes prior to the big day students learnt about how rockets work and they researched what a good rocket needs.

On the day students had to create their rockets and test them using the following boosters - Water, Vinegar and Baking Soda and Air Pressure using the air canon.

We also had Amadeo Enriquez Ballestero from the Science dept at the Otago Museum spend the day with us. He had a science display, helped the students create their rockets and then helped launch the rockets.

Awards were given for most creative rocket and the Rocket Girl Award which was presented to the class that had the rocket that went the longest distance.

Thank you to all the staff  and Amadeo for all your work before and during the day. Bring on Rocket Day 2020.
