Te Rangitāmiro ki Ōtepoti 2023

Sarah McKinley —

Last Thursday and Friday a wonderful group of Year 10s attended Te Rangitāmiro, a programme for Māori students that explores what it means to be indigenous through three key ideas - Whiria (identity), Paiheretia (connections) and Rukuhia (creating a legacy).

Through workshops, kaikōrero and activities, these Year 10 students explored where they came from, developed their connections to others and began to understand what it means to be a global citizen.

Students learned about Māori connections to North Asia, Southeast Asia and Latin America through stories, language and dance (learning the salsa was a highlight). They made new friends, new connections and the biggest takeaway over the two days was that being Māori is their Super Power!

As always, the students were fantastic ambassadors for Queen’s High School, demonstrating how engaged and energetic they are about their culture, heritage and identity.
