Year 12 Physics Fieldtrip - Curling

Tom Clark —

Two weeks ago Year 12 Physics students took a field trip to the ice stadium to try their hand at curling.

Because of the low coefficient of friction of ice, curling provides an ideal opportunity to analyse the conservation of momentum in 2 body collisions. It is also much harder than it looks! Students tried both the beginner's method of using the foothold called the 'hack' and the more advanced method of using a slider, with varying degrees of success (and the odd tumble).
