Food Technology

Carol Robertson —

It has been busy at all levels in the Food Technology department. Students have been busy creating and researching all aspects of food and nutrition.

Year 9

The second group of Year 9 students are currently presenting their slideshows on a nutrient they have researched and a food related illness that it is linked to. The presentations are impressive in both their content and delivery and are a pleasure to watch. The students peer critique each other with positive feedback given to each presenter. They will then cook a recipe they choose themselves that fits in with each student's research.

Year 10

The Year 10 students have been extremely busy designing and creating a new ice cream for a stakeholder. They have trialled and made their ice cream several times and are now ready to present their final results.

The Year 10 have also created a Food Magazine over Term 1 and 2 and some of these are very professional looking.

Year 11 Food and Nutrition

Both Year 11 classes have been working very hard both during and after lockdown. We are currently in the middle of an achievement standard assessment where the students plan food for one day for a nominated person. They have to then make a healthy, nutritious and interesting meal for that person. The meal must be safely and hygienically prepared, cooked and served. Students are assessed on a number of other criteria and written tasks are also required to gain merit and excellence.

Culinary Skills

The students in Culinary Skills are completing a Baking unit standard where one of their challenges was to make their own flaky pastry with the end result being delicious smells oozing out of the foods room as home-made sausage rolls were made. The students also made a variety of different cakes and decorated them.

Year 12 and 13 Food and Nutrition

Both classes are working hard to complete achievement standards. In Year 12 we are working on Sustainable Food Practices and the Year 13 students are researching a nutritional issue affecting New Zealanders.

We would like to thank Ms Barnsdale for all the hard work she has put in while taking Mrs Hanning's classes while she has been on maternity leave. Ms Barnsdale has really enjoyed her time here and has found the students to be friendly and conscientious. She is excited to see them completing their standards and achieving to their best. We wish Ms Barnsdale all the best.

We look forward to Ms Hanning's return, at the start of Term 3.
