My Trip to the Ethics Olympiad

Maisy Costa —

Last week five of our Year 11 and Year 12 students travelled to Christchurch for the school’s first ever Ethics Olympiad Competition.

Maisy Costa, Olivia Gray, Maddy Sinclair, Minduli Wewalage, and Maia Darlington were given several ethical conundrums that they were to debate and problem solve with rival schools. Year 12 student Maisy Costa has kindly shared her thoughts on the Ethics Olympiad.

“My trip to the Ethics Olympiad was an amazing experience. Both Mr Clark and Ms Meronek were super supportive of our group, helping us each to work on our case and improve it.  At the Olympiad, we had to compete against other schools and discuss each case, this involved thinking on the spot, working as a team and writing notes. The trip overall taught me how to respectfully agree or disagree with a person’s opinion, how to expand my ideas and also how to feel more confident when speaking. It was challenging at first to talk to other people about the cases because obviously it was my first time doing something like this, excluding debating. However, after a while my group and I loosened up and we became quite competitive. I would definitely recommend the Ethics Olympiad to other students, and I would definitely do this again!”
