Year 13 Geography and Tourism trip to Queenstown

Matthew Sherborne —

The annual Year 13 Geography and Tourism trip to Queenstown happened Wednesday to Friday of week 2 Term 2.

The trip was made up of 23 students, Mr Sherborne, Mrs Bishop-Cherry and Mrs Jubna. The first activity was the zipline and bungy at A.J Hackett Kawerau Bridge.  4 students were brave enough to bungy and around 20 did the zipline so all students challenged themselves in some way. The seminar was interesting and many of the students identified with A.J Hackett’s new motto ‘Live more, fear less’.  From there it was off to Queenstown for a walking tour and dinner.  Day 2 was full on to say the least. The gondola and luge was up first and the students quickly figured out the new fast track and challenged staff to a race. The seminar from management at Skyline introduced us to some new facts. Skyline gondola had over a million visitors last year and is now the most popular attraction in the whole of New Zealand. They are currently putting lights in around the track and should be offering night rides in a few months. The Kawarau jetboat ride was up next.  An hour of racing around the Kawarau and Shotover rivers was a thrilling first time experience for many. A new addition to the trip this year was the iFLY indoor skydiving experience. The students that did this thoroughly enjoyed it and are keen to try real skydiving at some point. The last activity was Fear Factory. All the brave students who went through it made it without having to utter the words “I chicken out”.  All in all the students had many new experiences and heard from industry leaders who proudly talked about career pathways in the Tourism industry. The student’s behaviour was impeccable and they were great ambassadors for Queen’s High School.
