Foundation Pupil Celebration

QHS —

Last Friday we hosted a reunion for Foundation Pupils of Queen's High School. It was a truly wonderful and special occasion!

The school enjoyed welcoming our foundation pupils back to Queen's. We welcomed them into assembly and then heard from the first head girl, Margaret Dawson. She shared entertaining stories about her time at Queen's that had the whole school laughing.

We were delighted to have Dame Pat Harrison and Gwen Clelland (née Sinclair), both teachers here at Queen's when it first opened. Dame Pat was known as  Miss Patricia Thompson then and later went on to become the Principal in 1975, until her retirement in 1994.

Ms Agnew shared information from our first yearbooks, showing us that what was important on the very first day the school opened in 1995 is still important to us now.

She told of how the school took 10 years from it’s first mention to the powers that be, till it was realised. In 1945 it was suggested to buy the land next to King’s for a school for girls. The Chairman of the High School’s Board of Governors words included ‘ not in my lifetime nor in yours will you ever see a school for girls there’.  How wrong he was, and how we wish he could see the school that Queen’s has grown into.

Ms Agnew went on to acknowledge our first pupils of Queen’s High School saying that they started the paving of the path before us that we are now adding too, and for this we are eternally grateful.  She added that  today, sadly, we still have and need women to continue to push for the very same ideals as they all did as the world is still not one of freedom, equality and education for all women.

Year 9 students then provided a guided tour of the school which was followed by a lunch and presentations held in the Library.

Thank you to Colleen Lyons and her team for organising and hosting this event for which the planning had started in 2019.

We look forward to the next time we get to host such an event again!
