Principal's Viewpoint - 17 November 2023
Nau mai haere mai
This week has been filled with students participating in athletics, gardening, triathlon on top of their regular curriculum commitments to Reading, Writing, Maths, Science, Tech, PE, Music and Art. Our NZ Curriculum document has given teachers the freedom to plan authentic and engaging programmes for our students. Two years ago the government at the time led a curriculum refresh where educators contributed to a review. The outcome was a common practice model for delivering the curriculum. This meant that teachers could teach following a common model. Each refreshed curriculum area is expected to be taught in all NZ schools by 2027. Who knows whether our new government will maintain this model. Teachers are currently doing their best to implement the curriculum following a “Know, Understand, Do” common practice model. In 2024 the leadership team is expecting our teachers to have a year of building on the skills they have learned this year rather than introducing change.
Tomorrow morning the Board of Trustees and the leadership team are meeting at the High School. We have booked a room to spend time discussing our strategic goals for the next 3 years. We will work with Whetu Cormick to facilitate discussion and engagement. This is an exciting time of year for robust discussion and sharing visionary ideas. We will create a draft document and share it with staff, students and parents for feedback and recommendations for improvement.
If you are participating in the Queenstown Marathon tomorrow, Waimarie Pai (Good luck)
