Information on Truancy

Regular attendance at school is important for students learning, wellbeing and their futures. The evidence is clear; there is a well-established relationship between attendance and achievement. Every day of non-attendance has a negative impact on learning and achievement.

All students must attend school every day unless they have a justified reason within our school policy for being absent, such as sickness.

This is just a timely reminder that even though parents may consider the following reasons for absence as justified, they do not fit within the school’s policy as a justifiable or acceptable reason for students to be away from school:

  • A New Zealand or overseas holiday during the school term.
  • Special family events like a birthday or a wedding.
  • Students sleeping in or parents running late due to personal transport issues such as traffic.
  • Taking your child skiing or snowboarding on a bluebird powder day.

We appreciate that attendance is complex, and we understand the challenges that may present. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou, a big thank you to those parents and caregivers who continue to work hard to support their children with regular attendance at school.

Please contact your child’s teacher if you are struggling with getting your child to school.
