Principals Message - 2 June 2023

Tihei mauri ora

Today we welcomed the Honourable Minister of Education, Jan Tinnetti to QPS. She was welcomed by our Head Girl, Emily Messingham and Deputy Head Girl, Livia Spijkerbosch from the carpark to the Hall for our school assembly. The girls did an outstanding job representing the students of QPS. She commented that our school entrance was very attractive, that our students appeared very chilled, highly engaged, and their singing was outstanding. The kapa haka students performed and certificates were presented for student success and achievement. I was really proud of everyone for showing care, respect and integrity towards each other and our Minister. Jeannie Galavazi, our Board Presiding Member (Chair), Matt Leach and I then were given an opportunity to briefly chat with the Minister about our school. She asked about our community and programmes of which we had many positive things to say. We did not need to show her the state of our buildings to be replaced as a timeframe for demolition and new buildings being brought to our site has been confirmed.

You will all be pleased to know, as we are, that next weekend Southbase will be erecting fences on site to begin our buildings project. We are receiving 10 teaching spaces from Wakatipu High School that were used during the building of their gymnasium and classroom blocks. These modular buildings are modern and fitted out purposefully to meet the needs of our students. They will be permanent classrooms with decking attached and toilet blocks. We are really excited as this has been a very long drawn out process. The project is expected to be completed for teachers and students to accommodate by the end of the year. Fingers and toes crossed.

Thank you to those of you who have contributed your skills to our DOTs programme. We really appreciate the time and commitment you have given our students.

I am off to spend the weekend at the beach this evening. I hope you all enjoy a 3 day weekend and get to visit the LUMA festival. Enjoy time with your families and see you next week.

Nga mihi nui
