Wananga ki Kaikoura
On Monday, Te Waka Uruao and Te Puna Karikari travelled to Kaikoura for a 3 day wananga to explore their whakapapa and Rakaihautu's journey.
Day one:
After arriving at Te Pā te Waka Uruao left kura at 9am to start their haerenga to Kaikoura. When arriving to the venue we were welcomed on as manuhiri to Takahanga marae. We were greeted with delicious food and were ready to get our beds all ready. We split the group into tane and wahine for our sleeping arrangements and quickly got them ready so that we could go to the beach.
An hour passed and the kaiarahi started taking pononga down to the beach for a koukou. The moana was warm and the pononga enjoyed it. We then went back and did a few other things such as, haka practice, dinner prep, skits prep and a history lesson with matua maani about the beautiful korero of the whakaahua in the marae. To whakakapi the night the pononga spent some down time together to do some bonding. There were games of mafia, spotlight, cards, etc.
Day two:
After waking up and getting ready for the day at 7am, pononga had breakfast at 8am. Once we all ate we were split off into our Kahui's to do some activities. Each kahui took half an hour turns preparing their skits, learning about powhiri, visiting niho pa and visiting the kaikoura museum.
At lunchtime we all welcomed Matua Tauira, Whaea Terina and whanau onto the marae with a powhiri. It was great to see pononga step up and take different roles in this.
The evening came and it was time to present our skits. Each kahui took turns performing their skits about a part of the stories that Matua Maani was teaching us earlier in the day. First place was Tipua who performed a cool chant/waiata about!.
Day three:
Day three was cleaning day. We woke up early to ensure everything got cleaned better than it was left for us. This took about an hour or two and we had time to chill so we gathered together to play a few games to kill the time.
We played, pako, sneak up on granny, sleeping lions, etc.
Overall it was a great noho and all the pononga had a fun time getting to know eachother better and their whakapapa.
