Kai Culture at Te Pā - 2022
We've seen encouraging tohu this year for our potential to harvest seed and grow healthy kai as Te Pā o Rākaihautū.
We have enjoyed a steady supply of hua whenua from our māra kai sofar in 2022. Pononga, kaimahi and whānau have all picked up the ko and pitched in at different times. We're excited by our potential to save more seed and grow more healthy kai at Te Pā and Pohoareare our red-zone site. Goals like Kai Motuhake - Food Sovereignty remain inspiring too.
With the help of Te Pūtahitanga o Te Waipounamu, Te Pā has continued a Kōanga Kai kaupapa that has supplied us with many seedlings. We have grown and eaten some (well... quite a lot) of those tipu, but with the future in mind we've let others go to seed. Pononga have helped to harvest that too and prepare it for storage in our pātaka kākano.
Like always, mahi wairākau has been a weekly thing. As we carry on our 'no-dig' approach at Pohoareare - pononga from Waimarie and Karikari have joined in some solid mahi chipping wood. This woodchip is crucial to our pū wairākau that will eventually become soil for future māra kai.
