Advancing Māori and Pasifika Educational Success

Tufulasi, Te Hurinui and Jen —

Ngā mihi manahau ki a koutou katoa,

Advancing Māori and Pasifika Educational Success

Do you teach or support Māori and Pasifika students in your school or kura? Are you interested in practice-led research that deepens your knowledge and understanding of Māori and Pasifika educational perspectives?

UC has two special postgraduate education courses and a new Master’s degree that build teachers as bicultural and diversity champions:

  • EDEM685 Culturally inclusive pedagogies: Motivating diverse learners (Semester 1)
This flagship Level 9 course is run as a block wānanga course at selected Saturday intervals during the semester. EDEM685 has been operating for two decades and across two universities providing kaiako with frameworks and strategies to meet the needs and challenges of today’s diverse learning settings across the sector.
Programme Coordinator: Jennifer Smith, email: jennifer.smith@canterbury.ac.nz
  • EDEM659 Advancing Pasifika Educational Success (Semester 2)
In this course you will critique and analyse Pasifika educational pedagogy, practices and policy formation. You will explore topics such as intergenerational dynamics, cultural authenticity and identity, as well as develop effective leadership qualities and practices.
Programme Coordinator: Tufulasi Taleni, email: tufulasi.taleni@canterbury.ac.nz
  • Master of Hōaka Pounamu (Semester 1 and 2)
This new Master’s degree is an ideal programme for teachers, leaders, and education researchers to raise the knowledge of te reo Māori in bilingual, immersion, and mainstream settings. You will extend your knowledge on the use of te reo Māori in the classroom and be a part of language revitalisation for Aotearoa and help immerse mātauranga and te reo Māori into everyday learning.
Programme Coordinator: Te Hurinui Karaka-Clarke, email: tehurinui.clarke@canterbury.ac.nz
