Mōkihi Making
Matua Jodi told a story about how Mōkihi started. He said that Mōkihi was really useful for gathering Mahinga Kai. After he finished, Te Puna Waimarie started making their Mōkihi.
The mokihi was a form of raft, fashioned mainly for bulrushes and flax. These simple vessel were excellent for crossing lakes and rivers. Under the direction of Tim Te Maiharoa of Moeraki, this reconstruction was made at Waihao in South Canterbury, in 1990.
On Tuesday the 13.03.2018 Te Puna Waimarie Teina and Tuakana went on a mission to make Mokihi. In the morning Te Puna Waimarie watched a video of Joe Wakefield making a Mokihi but instead the Mokihi was bigger. When the video ended it was time for lunch. After lunch Te Puna Waimarie gathered around and went straight to the hall. When Te Puna Waimarie got to the hall they met a lovely person. Ko tona ingoa ko Jodi Cameron.
Matua Jodi told a story about how Mōkihi started. He said that Mōkihi was really useful for gathering Mahinga Kai. After he finished, Te Puna Waimarie started making their Mōkihi. Before we started Te Puna Waimarie had some instructions to follow.
Get some Raupo and measure at the size of your arm.
Get 4 inch of string, find the middle, make a small loop and tie the String to middle of your Raupo.
Then u should have two strings on your left and right.
Put your finger on the string and go around twice and put the string in the first loop that u made.
Keep on doing that on both sides. When u have no more string tie it up at the end of your Raupo.
At 3.00 pm Te puna Waimarie cleaned up the hall and thanked matua Jody for teaching.
The End.
