Waimarie new hallway monitors
We interviewed two of Te Puna Waimarie kids about the hallway monitors and why they have them.
In May of this year, Te Puna Waimarie decided to create their own "Hall Monitors" Volunteers from the puna who would give their time (12.30pm - 1.00pm) to keep the hallways clear and safe.
"All the hallway monitors want to be police officers."
Each day pononga are on duty, they:
- Write time people are inside
- Who is inside
- What they are doing
Usually pononga are not supposed to be roaming the halls during the day, so, our monitors make sure to keep a good track of all activity during break times.
Why do you do it?
"People have been stealing stuff, that’s why they have them" (hall monitors)
"I like to take photos with the ipads"
"I like to wear the cool vest"
So you swap every week?
"The teachers choose there partners from the the pononga who volunteer and can show that they are responsible."
Have many things gone missing?
"The things that are lost: 2 balls, bag with money, more bags and some lunches..."
"When children are required to do various tasks, they learn self-discipline, time management, empathy, and the consequences of actions."

Our Pononga from Te Puna Waimarie enjoy the mahi that they are doing. Some of which hope to become Police Officers one day. Making our halls a safer space!
