Sustainability Report

Kate Rivers —

Eco Action Trust - A few years ago, Rangi Ruru, Christ's College and Shirley Boys' High students planted native trees and shrubs in the red zone beside QEII. These plants, grown in our onsite Eco Action school nurseries, are now tall and thriving. On 16 May just down from this site, 300 people from sixteen schools and community groups planted 3000 native trees and shrubs grown in Eco-Action school nurseries. Thank you to our Rangi Eco Warriors who were there early to position plants and to Bill, our caretaker, who transported hundreds of spades to the site. It is great to see so many students, staff and whānau getting involved in this action to restore native fauna and flora to this area. The next planting session is on Sunday 20 June 10am-12pm. We are always looking out for large buckets to water the plants. If you would like to get involved or provide sponsorship to enable us to establish more nurseries at schools, please contact k.rivers@rangiruru.school.nz or visit www.eco-action.co.nz

Ways to get involved! The Sustainability team welcome students, staff and whānau to get involved in our school nursery and vegetable garden. On Tuesdays after school there is the opportunity to help pot up seedlings at Rangi in our nursery and on Fridays there are Eco Action working bees from 3.30-4.30pm at Christ's College nursery opposite the main entrance. Rangi also supports Drayton Reserve working bees and there are a number coming up in June www.draytonreservevolunteers.org.nz Yesterday Dale, Alexander and Amelie DeLuca came and feed our beehive for winter. They shared lots of fascinating information about bees with staff and students. If you are interested in having a beehive in your own garden to help the environment, please contact Amelie DeLuca in Year 7.

Last week a car load of IT equipment was taken to Ecotech be reused rather than sent to landfill, mobile phones were sent to Re:Mobile to support Sustainable Coastlines. Over 5000 oral care items and snap lock bags collected in our Reuse Depot were sent to Terracycle to be reused and 3655 Nespresso capsules sent away to be recycled. We thank the Rangi community for supporting these initiatives. Soft plastics are being collected from the boarding house, but we encourage families to return soft plastics to supermarket collections.

Senior Sustainability and Year 7 Science classes will be collaborating later this year to create information about native plants to go in the red zone planting. We would like to connect with any whānau with knowledge they are willing to share about native plants and traditional Māori medicinal plants. We welcome any ideas or suggestions for further sustainability initiatives including collaborations.
