Reporting to Parents

Juliet Collins —

At Rangi, we constantly reflect on the nature of our curriculum and tutor reporting to parents. Please know that students whose learning is causing concern are highlighted by teachers to tutors, Deans and, in some cases, referred on to me. Parents are contacted and involved at the appropriate time. In other words, if there is issue, we will let you know.

Investigation into ‘real-time’ or ‘continuous’ reporting models has resulted in us reflecting on what we are currently doing regarding the timing of our written and face to face reporting. We have not uncovered a model that we feel satisfactorily reflects what we want to achieve.

In Term 1, we produce Progress Reports which provide a snapshot of how learning is unfolding. This is supported by the Learning Progress Conferences – an opportunity to have a face-to-face meeting with the teachers to discuss your daughters’ learning. We encourage girls to attend alongside their parents and caregivers. Boarder parents have a dedicated session on the last day of term but can attend any of the sessions.

In Term 2, there is a full written report from all subjects and a tutor comment. This is a lengthy process and there can be some weeks between when the comment was written and when the parent receives this. Nonetheless, these are an important formal document that has a clear place in your daughter’s portfolio.

In Term 3, parents of Junior students have a Learning Progress Conference in Week 4 to meet the teachers of new module subjects and to follow up any concerns identified by the teachers in the Term 2 reports. Parents of Seniors receive an NCEA current transcript with the Internals and Practice External (used for emergencies if required) grades. This is followed by a Learning Progress Conference, usually in the second to last week of term. This is to communicate any plans or strategies for your daughters as they head towards final Internal assessments and NCEA External Examinations.

Boarder parents (Senior and Junior) have a Learning Progress Conference on the last day of term.

Junior parents receive a second full written report and tutor comment at the end of Term 4.

Mid-Year Reports 2021

Whilst not changing the frequency or timing of our reports for 2021, we have changed the wording of the report criteria to align more with our Rangi Graduate profile. Subjects will report on criteria under two headings – ‘Learning Habits’, which includes attributes and dispositions and ‘Focus for Learning’ which includes more subject and context descriptors. There is a continuum indicator that places your daughter on a ‘developing’ scale. Assessment outcomes may be discussed in the teacher’s comment. A sample of the new format is below.
