Visual Art Happenings

Niamh Cunningham —

Amie Coombes, Brie Freeman, Sam Senior, Eva Wu and Ava Smith have all had their artworks selected for The Curators Room 2021 Exhibition. Artworks by Amie, Brie and Ava have made the Top 15 list.

Brie Freeman in Year 13 and Ms Rivers (Head of Visual Arts Learning Area) have had their works selected for the Zonta Art Awards 2021. Recent Rangi graduate, Rosetta Brown has a sculptural work in the award.

Ms Macleod (Photography and Art teacher) currently has two sculptures in the Te Wheke - Pathways Across Oceania Exhibition at Te Puna o Wai Whetū - Christchurch Art Gallery. She is the 2021 recipient of the Olivia Spencer Bower Foundation Art Award. We congratulate Ms Macleod on these great achievements!

Art Extension Classes will start on Friday March 12 and run from 3.30 - 4.30pm on Fridays during term time until the end of Term 3. Niamh Cunningham, Penny Frost and Harriet Eglinton will be the main tutors, giving their time to help any interested people. All year levels and staff are welcome! Come along, meet others and develop new skills in a fun and supportive environment! No experience required! Students and staff may come on a casual or regular basis and may choose to work on curriculum learning, a collaborative artwork or an individual project. Materials used during extension classes will be charged to goldsheets. If you are staying after school to work in the art rooms, please inform your whānau. Rooms close at 5.00pm. In Term Two a Photography Extension Class will run for anyone interested in developing their photographic skills.

There is great energy in the Art rooms with the walls filling with senior work showing lots of different stylistic approaches. Year 11 are in the midst of charcoal drawings, Year 10 learning to draw portraits, Year 9 exploring watercolour and Year 7 making wire sculptures.

For students with iwi affiliations, the Kiingi Tuhetia Portraiture Award for Emerging Māori Artists has extended their deadline until mid March. See Ms Rivers for details.
