Rangi Ruru Coder Writes Her Own Online Cake Shop - Hannah's Cakes and Bakes

Dave Hullen —

Hannah Berrill in Year 11 has used the skills and tools she’s learnt in Digital Technology this year to build a website outside of class for her cake business.

Hannah sat down to answer some questions about her project.

How long have you been in the cake business?

Two years.

What prompted you to build a cake site?

I’d finished the projects in class and wanted to work on something of my own.

What did you use to make it?

Visual Studio and GitHub. It’s hosted on Netlify.

What languages did you use to make it?

HTML and JavaScript – and CSS.

Can you describe some of the features?

There’s a page of photos of all my cakes. You can click on them to make them pop up bigger – it’s called a modal. Another feature is you can specify the search based on the types of icing.

What’s next for the cake website?

I want to send it out to people to get more business.

What about in terms of building the site?

I’d like to build an ordering box and a cart so that people can add to it and then go to the check-out. And maybe a favourites page where people can keep track of which ideas they like.

You can find Hannah’s Cakes and Bakes online here.
