Mandy Anderson —

End of Term Wrap-Up

It’s been a busy end to the sporting term at Rangi and more activity to come in the upcoming term break. Good luck to our athletes who are competing in the following events over the break:

  • Ten cyclists will compete in the SISS Road Cycling Championships at Ruapuna MotorSports Park on Saturday 9 & Sunday 10 July. The cycling squad have been showing great progress over the recent weeks in the Wednesday Schools' Cycling Programme so are looking forward to competing in Individual and Team Time Trials and the Road Race at the South Island event.
  • 1st and 2nd XI Hockey teams will compete against teams from St Cuthbert’s College on Thursday 22 and Friday 23 July at Nga Puna Wai from 2pm each day. Get along to support the teams!
  • Our 9A and 10A netball teams will contest the Junior SISS Netball Development Tournament – Monday 12 to Wednesday 14 July, Hagley Netball Courts. Last week the 9A netball team won the Year 9 Challenge Shield, beating STAC 9A; and defended it this week against CGHS – congrats girls!
  • Juliet Freeman will compete in the SISS and NZSS Orienteering Championships & the SISS Rogaine Champs.

To these and any Rangi student representing the school or the region this term break - wear your Blue and Gold with pride!

NEW EQUESTRIAN MANAGER APPOINTED

Exciting times ahead for Rangi Ruru Equestrian with the appointment of new programme manager – Sally Goldsmith.

Sally will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the programme with her extensive involvement in a variety of roles within the equestrian community, both locally and nationally. Her equestrian experience and knowledge, combined with her marketing and event management background will be valuable in ensuring the continued growth of equestrian activities at Rangi Ruru.

Sally will start in the position on Monday 16 August. We look forward to welcoming her into the Sports Department and the wider Rangi whanau.

CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT & RETURN TO SPORT

Reports of students suffering symptoms of, or diagnoses of concussion, are coming across our desk on a weekly basis. Increasingly our challenge is managing the return of students to sport – let alone school - post-concussion. Our team of coaches, convenors and managers are conscious of ensuring that the return to play is safe for students and follows the school guidelines which stipulate a gradual return to physical activity once completely symptom-free for seven days OR a Medical Professional has given clearance to return to sport.

Please take a look at the Graduated Return to Sport Protocol which has been published by ACC Sportsmart:

As Caregivers, we ask that you support this approach to a return to play. While a student may be cleared to play one week, they may well experience symptoms as they return to full involvement in sport. Should this happen, it is important that a stand-down period is followed, until the student is again symptom free for seven days. It’s important that we keep the student’s wellbeing at forefront of mind and err on the side of caution by sitting them out for a game or training until follow up has been undertaken.

TRANSPORT TO AND FROM SPORT

We have recently been experiencing some issues with our transport provider – Blue Star Taxis. If a team arrives late or their taxi fails to arrive at the end of a game, we ask that students let the relevant Sports Staff know so we can follow up with Blue Star.

KEEPING WARM….

A reminder that students are able to wear a navy poly prop under their Rangi Ruru sports uniform when playing sport. On these cold winter mornings, afternoons and evenings we have been experiencing, an additional layer is important!
