An Update from the Art Department
Kia ora Rangi Hapori,
After a refreshing break, students have jumped right back into their creative endeavours with renewed energy. This term promises to be both dynamic and productive, with internal deadlines and portfolio submissions on the horizon. We are also very excited to welcome Julia Holderness, our new artist-in-residence and former Rangi student to our team!
The art department is alive with activity, as students dedicate their lunchtimes and after-school hours to their projects. The art block remains open to all students during these times for those eager to put in some extra mahi throughout this busy term.
Year 9 students have embarked on their art module, showcasing their talents and developing their skills in the drawing of rodents and cupcakes. Their work is both imaginative and very impressive. Well done Year 9!
Year 10 akōnga have started exploring the world of artist books, brainstorming and delving into important parts of their identities that might inspire their projects. This module offers an exciting opportunity for students to focus on their artistic development.
Year 11 students are deep into individual research for their folios, refining their skills and honing into the development their ideas, key in the success of NCEA folios.
Year 12 akōnga are immersing themselves in reductive woodcuts, building on their knowledge of this from previous years, pushing artistic boundaries and experimenting with new methods.
Year 13 students are working diligently on their individual portfolios, demonstrating extraordinary commitment and creativity as there approaching deadline gets closer and closer.
The Thursday after-school art club continues to thrive, providing a wonderful space for students to explore their creativity.
This week, Sarah Vogt and Rosa Connor’s artworks will be featured and available for purchase at the Cashmere Club as part of the Canterbury Arts Show (artwork’s pictured below). Their pieces highlight the exceptional talent within our student body and offer a wonderful opportunity to support and appreciate their creative achievements.
This term also features the Scape Public Art Competition. The Scape Competition offers a fantastic opportunity for students of all year levels to showcase their talents in mural, photography, and sculpture concepts. It’s a vibrant platform for creative expression and public engagement, encouraging young artists to contribute their unique perspectives to the art community.
We’re proud of all our students and look forward to celebrating their achievements as they continue to excel in their artistic pursuits this term.
