Hākinakina Happenings at Rangi Ruru
The last term of school sport promises to be a quick one, with a fast run down to the end of the year.
Term 4 sports gets underway day one of the term, with the weekly volleyball competition starting on Monday, 16 October; followed by other activities each day.
Draws will be available each week on the Rangi Ruru sport website. Scroll down and click on the sport and/or team your daughter is involved with to see the arrangements.
Many of our ākonga have been involved in sport over the recent break – representing either Rangi Ruru or Canterbury. A shout out to the following students who we are aware of (apologies if we have missed anyone!).
ADVENTURE RACING
Molly Brown, Bex Skinner (both Year 13), Marissa Reeg, & Alyssa Buchan (both Year 11), combined with Christchurch Boys High School students to compete in the national final of the Hillary Challenge in the first week of the term break. Held at the Tongariro Centre, 12 school teams from around the country took on five days of grueling multi-sport activities. Known as the toughest adventure race in New Zealand for secondary school students, it was an amazing experience for the team. Final placing – 9th. Tu meke team!
CYCLING
Amelea Scott (Year 10) & Mya Wolfenden (Year 13) competed at the South Island Secondary School Track Cycling Championships in Invercargill and both returned home with podium finishes. In the Omnium – Amelea was 3rd (U16) and Mya was 2nd (U20).

Juliet Freeman (Year 11) travelled to Perth during the October break, Juliet was part of the New Zealand Secondary School Orienteering team which competed in the Australian Schools Orienteering Championships. Run over three events (sprint, long-distance and relay), the Australian Schools Orienteering Championships pit Australian state schools teams and the two New Zealand schools teams against each other, with runners and relay teams earning points for placings.
Juliet had a fantastic time and did some great running as a first-year senior in the tricky technical terrain over all events. All efforts were rewarded with New Zealand schools teams placing 1st and 2nd overall against the Australian state teams. The Southern Cross Shield returns to New Zealand for another year.
