January/February

  • Check out the Careers NZ website https://www.careers.govt.nz/
  • Attend Career Expos in the area
  • Attend university/polytech/gap year visits at school
  • Complete first meeting with Careers & Pathways Strategist
  • If planning to go overseas, research specific requirements and deadlines
  • Sign up for SAT’s (if applying to the USA) at https://www.sat.org/start


March/April

  • Apply for Gap Year programs (Letz Live, Latitude)
  • Check out tertiary education prospectus
  • Schedule in diary university/polytech open days
  • Do your research
  • If planning to go overseas, finalize your list of universities to apply for, and confirm deadlines/application requirements
  • Sign up for SAT subject tests if planning to go to the USA


May/June

  • Make sure you are on track to get University Entrance
  • Check out university application deadlines and requirements and put in diary
  • Begin exploring financial options – plan a realistic budget, talk to family, find a workable goal
  • If applying overseas, begin application process


July

  • Many university and industry scholarships open (https://www.moneyhub.co.nz/scholarships-nz.html)
  • Make a list of scholarships you are eligible for, and plan out a timeline for the application process
  • Schedule a meeting with the Careers & Pathway Strategist to help you plan out the rest of your year
  • Double check entry-requirements and deadlines for the courses you’re applying for


August/September

  • Apply for halls/accommodation – be extremely careful to meet deadlines
  • Request hall recommendation
  • Take a tour of available facilities
  • Receive Gap Year placement and accept or decline
  • If applying overseas, have applications completed and ready to submit


October/November


December

  • Receive conditional offer of place pending Y13 results; confirm or decline placement
