Celebrating Tech Week NZ
Last week we dove into the digital world, celebrating Tech Week NZ with an array of video game-based activities designed not only for enjoyment but also to educate and inspire our future innovators.
Through our FPV Drone Simulator, students donned DJI goggles to pilot a drone through virtual landscapes using the DJI flight app. This experience wasn’t just about the thrill of flight; it provided a hands-on lesson in the complexities of aerial navigation and the intricate technology that makes it possible, paving the way for future applications in various industries.
The adrenaline continued with Nintendo Switch Mario Kart racing, where students strategised and competed in high-speed races. This friendly competition was more than just a game; it was a lesson in critical thinking and tactical planning, skills essential for tomorrow’s leaders.
Additionally, our F1 racing simulation introduced students to the sophisticated world of motorsports, where technology meets speed, offering insights into the physics and technology behind professional racing.
A popular activity was Beat Saber on Meta Quest VR, where students sliced through music blocks in a virtual reality environment. This wasn’t just an exercise in virtual reality gaming; it was a demonstration of how immersive technologies can be used to enhance cognitive skills in an engaging and interactive setting.
Through these activities, students gained invaluable exposure to emerging technologies, experiencing firsthand the tools and applications that will shape their future careers and industries. It’s about more than just playing games; it’s about building understanding of the mechanisms behind them, fostering a deeper appreciation for the technology that will become standard in their lives as creators and innovators.
As we think about Tech Week NZ, we reflect on the importance of integrating innovative technologies into education. By giving students the tools and knowledge to not just navigate but also innovate with technology, we are preparing them to be the pioneers of tomorrow’s tech-driven world.
This week was a glimpse into the dynamic, fast-evolving world of gaming and technology—a sector rich with opportunities for creative and technical careers. As we look forward to the future, we remain committed to providing our students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive and lead in this exciting digital age.
