Rangi students artwork in SCAPE Public Art

Kate Rivers —

'Strength in Sisterhood' a large sculpture/printmaking installation by Hazel White, Rosetta Brown and Georgina Jolly (Year 13), is currently in ReA

Strength in Sisterhood was chosen from 145 submissions, by the selection panel to be produced for the 2019 SCAPE Public Art Re:ACTIVATE Aspiring Artist Exhibition. The selection team was impressed with this entry for concept, simplicity, collaborative approach, the use of profiles and the unique idea to suspend the work from the tree. Criteria included designing an artwork specific to the site (known as Hack Circle), on the corner of Cashel and High Street.

After their concept was selected from drawings and written notes, Georgina, Rosetta and Hazel worked through a mentoring process with the SCAPE team, their engineers and printers during Term 3 in preparation for the production period, and installation of the work.

An app is available to download with maps of the SCAPE Public Art currently igniting central Christchurch, or go online www.scapepublicart.org.nz

Congratulations to all involved, including all students who submitted. There were Rangi students on the shortlist. Some of the top concepts and submissions are presently on show at Türanga.

SCAPE Public Art provides a wonderful opportunity for emerging artists and designers to learn about the production process and have their public art released on a large scale in a public space. This year the season finishes on 16 November.
