Theatre Arts Update

Peter Rutherford —

National Shakespeare Festival

Over Queen's Birthday weekend four students travelled to Wellington to perform at the Shakespeare Globe Centre National Shakespeare Festival with their five-minute scene from Romeo and Juliet. Pictured above are Ash Kelliher as Romeo and Poppy Sam as Juliet. Georgia Moynihan directed the scene and also performed as a part of the Shakespeare Youth Company, selected from students throughout the country. Holly Williams played the role of the nurse in the scene. It was a pleasure to visit Wellington for such an auspicious event, to watch student work from around Aotearoa. Other highlights included visiting Te Whaea - housing Toi Whakaari/New Zealand Drama School and the School of Dance - and Te Auaha, a training institute right in the centre of Wellington which also teaches Performing Arts courses.

Success in New York for Old Girl Meg Roberts

Meg Roberts, who graduated from Rangi Ruru in 2019, was accepted into the summer intensive programme at the New York Conservatory of Drama with a top scholarship in the last few weeks, and in the last few days has been accepted into the two-year degree at the Conservatory, with a scholarship towards that course also. Meg played lead roles in our productions of Revenge of the Amazons (2017) and Wheeler’s Luck (2019). She was also a member of the team who won Best Youth Production and Best Overall Production at the 2018 National TheatreFest with a performance of excerpts from Evan Placey’s Girl’s Like That directed by Director of Theatre Arts, Peter Rutherford. We wish her the best in her pursuit of her passion for drama studying in New York.
