There continues to be a public/private, home/school divide that fails to engage with the complexities of sexuality education in the digital age. Adults are often haunted by their own sexuality education experiences and continue to try and protect young people from the complexity, irrationality, and joy of relationships. Rather than opening up discussion around the broader determinants of sexuality, this protection often shuts down the opportunity to engage with young people and perpetuates a discourse of risk. Young people have called for quality sexuality education and parents need to play a part.

This interactive, and fun, workshop will explore preliminary findings from current research into the way a group of NZ parents of 11-14-year-olds understand and experience sexuality education with their children. Utilising narratives, it will explore how parents/caregivers talked about their understandings and experiences of engaging in sexuality education with their children. These examples are a means of highlighting the uncertainty that occurs around talking about topics like sex, pleasure, pornography, consent, and love. Through engaging with other parents/caregivers narratives, young people, and international research, participants in this workshop will explore and reflect on different ways of thinking about the provision of sexuality education.

This workshop is designed to support parents/caregivers to think holistically about sexuality education. It is suitable for parents and caregivers of 5-17 year olds, students, and anyone who works with young people.
