Sandra Hastie —

2020 has been a year full of challenges and opportunities.

The challenge of lockdown has given us an opportunity to review how we schedule our timetable. You will be aware that after lockdown we sent you a survey asking which aspects of our Remote Learning Programme and timetable worked well, and more importantly, what we can do to strengthen our offering moving forward. Students and staff were also asked for feedback.

As a result of this feedback, our own research and wider consultation with our staff, we are moving into the following timetable trial for Term 3. The changes reflect an increased focus on ensuring the wellbeing and success of our girls, enabling them to connect and develop a sense of belonging here at Rangi, whilst maintaining time for extra-curricular and other activities.

Timetable changes

  • Our day will officially begin at 8.50am with either Whanau or connecting time. This will allow the first part of the day (prior to 8.50am) to be available for practices, rehearsals, student self-directed learning, student conferences with staff, etc.
  • Breaks have been shortened at interval and lunchtime so the focus of these times is on recharging, eating and connecting, rather than dashing off to rehearsals or other school related activities. This puts the focus on wellbeing, as our increasing concern was that some students had not had the time to eat or connect during the day.
  • With shortened breaks, we will be finishing at 3.15pm each day, other than Wednesdays where Years 9 - 13 will continue to finish at 2.30pm and Years 7 - 8 will finish at 3.15pm.

Although we are finishing at 3.15pm, students are able to remain at school and work independently until they are able to make their way home via pickups/drop offs or public transport. This also applies for school prior to 8.50am, where independent working spaces will be available from 8.00am each day.

The trial will be reviewed in Term 4 where we will again seek feedback from students, parents and staff, to inform our decisions for 2021.

I thank you for your support regarding these changes.
