Sporting Update – The Term of Junior Sport!

Mandy Anderson —

It’s been a busy term to date for Rangi Ruru sporting teams, with still more to come. A summary of what our girls have been up to in recent sporting endeavours….all in the last week!

Tennis

Junior tennis players from Years 9 and 10 competed this week in the Canterbury Junior Tennis Championships with some great success and learnings for all. Congratulations to the following girls for their placings:

  • Lily Parkinson – 2nd  Yr 10 Girls Singles
  • Sophia Gould – 1st Yr 9 Girls Singles Div 2
  • Jessie Moffatt - 2nd Yr 9 Girls Singles Div 2
  • Georgia Raine – 3rd Yr 9 Girls Singles Div 2
  • Sophia Gould, Georgia Raine, Alice Hunter and Emma Williams – 3rd equal Yr 9 Girls Doubles.

Volleyball

Our Junior Volleyball team have been competing in the South Island Div 2 Championships over the last few days. The girls played eight games over three days - in some very hot conditions! They won the first five games in two sets before dropping two of the last three games to finish 6th. We are super proud of the individual and team development during the course of the season and in particular during this last tournament for the year. Thanks to coaches Kirsty and Laura for their input this season.

Waterpolo

Our Junior team competed at the South Island Championships in Blenheim from Thurs 21-Sun 24 September and on the back of their Canterbury title the week before, went on to claim the South Island title for the second year running! Congratulations girls on an outstanding season. Special shout out to Aggie Weston and Hayley Bond for being named in the Tournament Team and a huge thanks to our amazing coaching team – Zoli Boros and Laura Hammond.

Triathlon

Huge shout out to Finella Guttman for taking out the Canterbury Primary Schools' Triathlon title in windy and hot conditions on Wednesday. Finella stormed home over a minute faster than 2nd place – outstanding effort Finella!

Lifesaving

And some great news today, we have retained the Bamford Trophy for the most Lifesaving awards nationally, for the third year running!
