Intercultural Awareness
People and cultures share similarities and we also rejoice in our differences.
Each language and culture provide us with a range of perspectives in our global world. We are exposed to different tastes and attitudes with regard to such things as food, music, sport, family life, politics, death and dying that should make us more aware, more accepting, less judgemental and more capable of humanity.
I hope we are learning this in Christchurch as we know, only too well, the effect of attitudes of xenophobia and non-acceptance; we have a way to go to ensure that we all show respect to those who are both similar and different to us.
We need to learn how to collaborate and communicate in such a way that we can agree on major issues, on how to ensure the planet we share is cared for, that innovation is encouraged, that we can work in effective teams in the interests of the common good.
International and Languages Week
This week has been International week, our chance to celebrate languages, our international community within the school, as well as the international partnerships we are also involved with.
From exchanges to trips to all corners of the globe, our girls really are global citizens. We are also lucky to have such a diverse community here at Rangi Ruru, as shown by the map of origin that has been on the window of the dining room all week. It has been very interesting seeing where so many members of our school community and their families have originated from.
It has been fantastic learning more about our community’s heritage as well as some of the customs different cultures have. Seeing beautiful traditional dress during the week, as well as tasting so many delicious dishes from around the world has been a great experience for all of the students and staff.
We look forward to celebrating Māori Language week (Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori) in September when the focus is closer to ‘home’.
Awards Assembly
Our Awards Assembly on Monday showcased more incredible achievements from our girls. These awards highlighted only the tip of the iceberg, the finished products they say – however we know it has been their hard work, resilience and determination that has helped them achieve all of these great things. It was wonderful to see so many parents joining us to celebrate these successes and we look forward to helping our girls continue to reach their goals.
