Dr Sandra Hastie —

Kia ora,

A huge congratulations to our ākonga who performed strongly last week across a multitude of sporting, cultural, musical events and competitions. Our rowing squad took out the top overall school in the country for the third consecutive year at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Champs, and brought home the Levin Jubilee Cup with a gold and silver in the U18 8+, something which has never been done before in either the girls or boys U18 8+ races. The squad celebrated the wins, as well as the results which didn’t go our way, and above all else were gracious and humble.

Rangi Ruru also had a strong week in waterpolo, taking out the South Island Secondary Schools (SISS) championships, at the SISS Athletics with a number of outstanding performances, and many other codes. Please see our Director of Sport’s update here for all the results. We also had success at the Young Farmer of the Year competition on Saturday, with members of our Young Farmers Club forming three teams, and Year 10 students Mikayla Malloy and Tabitha White placing second, earning a spot in the FMG Junior Young Farmers of the Year grand final!

Our 2023 Senior Production ‘Translations’ is showing from 11-13 May in our Merivale Lane Theatre. It will no doubt be another stunning performance from our talented young thespians. You can find out more and book your tickets here. In other Performing Arts news, our Sheilah Winn group of Amelia Kauder, Georgia Dann and Pippa Anderson have been selected to attend the National Shakespeare Festival after their 5 minute performance at the regional festival; only one five minute performance out of nine regional performances was chosen to attend the nationals, a great effort! Eight of our students, Chloe Jiang, Anya Fang, Jessica Drury, Polly Lee, Hayley Jiang, Mariella Wallace, Elise Tian and Keina Rollinson have all successfully auditioned for the 2023 NZ Secondary Schools' Symphony Orchestra, and excitingly will be performing with the orchestra in Christchurch in April.

We’ve got another busy term in Term 2, and we’ve got an update here regarding our events schedule. There are some dates later in the year which you may like to put in your diaries now (a reminder that all events are on our calendar here):

  • Grandparents' & Generations' Day - Friday, September 15, 1.50pm
  • Prize Giving - Tuesday, December 5, 6.30pm
  • Leavers’ Ball - Thursday, December 7 (time TBC)

Thank you all for support you’ve shown Rangi Ruru this term. I hope you all have a wonderful Easter and term break. Travel safe if you’re heading away, revive and relax, and take the time to connect with each other.

Ngā mihi
