Week 6, Term 3 2019

Two Canterbury Secondary School Championships Titles won.

The Senior A Basketball team took home the McDonald’s Whelan Trophy on Tuesday night, making them Division One Canterbury champions! It was a gripping final against Christchurch Girls’ High School with a final score of 64-61. Our very own Ashlee Strawbridge also picked up the MVP award. Another reason the win is super special for our girls is that Bill Whelan, whom the trophy is named after, introduced the game of basketball at Rangi Ruru back in the 1970’s – he was also on hand to present the trophy to the girls and it was indeed a proud moment for us all.

1st XI Hockey

Our 1st XI Hockey team also secured a win in the finals of the Canterbury Connectics Secondary School Premier League with a tense 2-1 win over St Margaret's College last Friday night. It was an exciting game with a nerve wracking penalty corner awarded in the final minutes to St Margaret’s, however, our defence held them out and we secured the win to become2019 Champions. A special thanks goes to Archibalds for their support of the team this season.

Congratulations to both teams for their exceptional results and a big thank you to all the coaching staff who have given up their time and expertise to work with our girls. It was fantastic to see so many supporters and the strength of sisterhood at each of these finals as well which really keep the girls spirits up in close fought matches.

It is the time of the year when we have teams heading off all over the country to compete in Winter Tournament next week. To our Cycling, Football, Netball A, Hockey 1st and 2nd X1’s, Intermediate A Basketball and Senior A Basketball teams we wish you all the very best of luck. I know that you will represent Rangi with pride and I hope that you enjoy this experience - I wish you all safe travels. I am delighted to be able to visit our Football girls in Timaru and our 1st X1 Hockey in Auckland during next week.

Reverend Kirstie McDonald

Our Chaplain Reverend Kirstie McDonald is currently on sabbatical leave from Rangi Ruru until the end of this term. Cover for her classes has been arranged internally during this time.
