Service at Rangi

Mette van Pallandt/Service Council —

The Service Council is working hard to keep our girls motivated and inspired so they can continue to positively impact our community! Here's some of what we're doing this year:

—Changes to the offering system—
The year started off a little differently with some major reform to what was previously known as 'Weekly Offering'. Instead of the girls bringing in any spare change they could find once a week, the service council created a more focused initiative which has seen every form class choosing an animal to symbolically 'adopt' from either the Aspinall Foundation or Durrell wildlife Trust. They brought in donations to be collected over the duration of two terms, and it has proved to be extremely successful with almost every single class hitting the target amount of money they needed to raise! It was also a great way to make girls aware of global environmental issues happening right now, and we're very proud of their efforts in raising over a thousand dollars!

—Offering focus Term 3/4—
Of course, we're only halfway through the year and there is still plenty more we can do in the upcoming terms! Instead of picking another animal to whom their offering donations will go to, we've switched it up and form classes have two terms to raise the money to sponsor a child through KidsCan.

KidsCan is a charity which works to help Kiwi kids from underprivileged backgrounds, providing them with necessities such as food and clothes. With 254,000 New Zealand kids living in some form of poverty, this is a cause we're hoping the girls will really get behind. If every form class reaches the target amount, collectively as a school, the money we raise could sponsor a child for three years.

—40 hour famine—
Last term from 7th-9th June 40 girls from Rangi took part in the 40 Hour Famine. This year the money raised from the Famine is going towards supporting the children of South Sudan. There were so many unique projects, including a group who listened to the song 'Old Town Road' for forty hours without stopping! The dedication of all the girls and their sponsors definitely paid off and we smashed our target, raising $5945 towards children in South Sudan. There were also 7 girls who raised over $200 each which is an incredible effort. We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who took part and to those who supported the girls throughout the event.

—Christchurch Neonatal Ward—
Over the next two terms, we’ve also got a particular focus on the Christchurch Neonatal Ward, and we're committed to providing them with artwork made by our very own girls in order to brighten up the walls of the ward as it could use a little decoration!

Over the rest of Term 3 we're also asking girls to bring in the toiletries they may find at hotels as these will be used to make care packages for mothers staying with their premature babies. If you have these at home, please think about donating them to this worthwhile cause!

Overall, the Service Council is incredibly pleased with how involved girls have been with these various service projects, and we're excited at the enthusiasm showcased over the past two terms. We hope this enthusiasm to help others and serve the community can continue for the remainder of the year and beyond!
