NCEA changes announced

Juliet Collins —

The Minister of Education has announced seven changes to NCEA to make it more robust, consistent, inclusive and accessible for students of all abilities and backgrounds

The changes are all aligned with the Ministry of Education’s five principles of a quality qualification – wellbeing, credibility, coherence, equity and inclusion, and pathways. The intention is that the changes will improve the value of the qualification and will also reduce the volume of assessment giving teachers more time for teaching across the full curriculum.

The timeline for implementation of the changes gives two years for development, planning and trailing with new standards registered for Level 1 in 2022. We will keep you informed as information becomes available from the Ministry. Please be assured that parent information evenings will be held as the details become reality.

NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship removal of fees

The Minister of Education has made a pre-budget announcement around NCEA.

Fees will no longer be charged for participating in NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship, with funding instead to be provided directly to NZQA by Government.

The removal of NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship fees will apply to all domestic students, and students from the Cook Islands and Niue, enrolled at a secondary school participating in NCEA or New Zealand Scholarship. International students will still be required to pay NCEA fees.
