Visual Arts Update

Gracie Liu —

Year 7 Art

We are currently learning about kōwhaiwhai patterns, traditional shapes and motifs, and the way elements such as a fern frond or kakabeak flower are stylised. Using forms in nature, ākonga are producing their own kōwhaiwhai pattern, through learning about geometry, shape, reflection, rotation, scale and enlargement.

Year 9 Art

Our Year 9 classes are producing surrealist works as drypoints, photograms or sculptural works.

Meg Wright (Year 9) - Pencil drawing
Olivia Long (Year 9) - Drypoint etching
Ahlya Jay (Year 9) - Drypoint etching

Year 10 Art

Year 10 students have recently completed Ex Libris prints or water colour paintings as part of individual projects towards an artist’s book. They are now embarking on producing observational portrait drawings.

Year 10 Digital Art

After looking at examples of graphic novels, ākonga are now planning their own graphic novel and using digital or hand-made artmaking processes.

Maeve Flyger (Year 10) - Drypoint etching

Year 11 Art

Following on from charcoal drawings, our classes have begun scratching drypoint prints and carving woodcuts.

Katherine Wang (Year 11) - Charcoal

Joyce Chen (Year 11) - Charcoal
Ivy Liu (Year 11) - Charcoal with still life in the background

Year 12 Paint/Print

Last week ākonga completed a still life painting using a primary colour and its complimentary to create tertiary grey tones. This week they are working on a painting using local colours (actual colour of the objects) and next week they begin researching ideas for individual projects.

Year 12 Photography

Year 12 photographers have been working in the darkroom this week learning traditional process and understanding the concept of "drawing with light".

Year 12 Design

Students in Year 12 Design are all currently establishing their individual projects. Their provocation can be anything from a social campaign to spread awareness about an issue, an event, a product, a brand campaign and anything in between. The diversity of their interests is present in the class as we have projects covering an Astrology Card Company, a band called Broken Record, a Wes Anderson film fest, A Dance Symposium, a project about Fears and a campaign called "Know Your Clothes" to encourage individuals to question where the clothes are produced and end up.

Year 13 Design, Paint, Photography and Printmaking

Ākonga are working on individual propositions and will present their work to their peers in Week 10 for whole class critiques.

Special thank you to Harriette Jolly, Ellie Bennett, and Hannah Thorburn for running the very successful and popular Art Club. The students within the club are currently making a large scale artwork together, with each person doing a painting per part.
