Sports Update
Welcome back to Term 2 – and winter sport!
It has been a challenging and somewhat extended trialling process for winter sport teams this year.…but we are nearly there! Netball, hockey, rugby and basketball are now all underway, with remaining sports kicking into competition next week. Thanks to everyone for their patience as covid and unwellness altered the timeline for the staging of trials.
Each week, draws and arrangements will be posted on The Hub – accessible here: https://hub.rangiruru.school.nz/
It has definitely been a busy start to the term with the school cross country, along with the Canterbury Secondary School Swimming and Road Race Championships events in the first two weeks. So great to see events returning to secondary school sport and fabulous to see our students getting out there and enjoying their involvement across all levels! Read on for the results of these events and some remarkable achievements by our sporting wahine over the past month.
Rangi Ruru School Cross Country
It was a perfect afternoon for a cross country race and school spirit was evident for all to see. The shortened Clan Fun Run attracted a large number of runners, all earning a point for their clan. Well done to everyone who competed or participated for clan points. The final results are available here:

Celebrating Our Sporting Wahine
Adventure Racing - The Rangi Ruru Adventure Race team of Juliet Freeman, Vesper Woodfield, Sophie Sara and Sophie Maxwell competed in the South Island Secondary Schools Adventure Race Champs (SISSARC), which was hosted alongside the Kaikōura Adventure Race on Sunday April 24. The junior team has only been working together since late March, meeting for team bike rides and Rogaine events and it is a testament to the teams’ tenacity and their ability to work together that they were able to come away with a second place overall in the 6 hour Intermediate Category. An impressive result - congratulations team on this amazing achievement! The team will now turn their focus to the Get 2 Go Regional Challenge later in the year.
Juliet Freeman represented the Plains Peninsula Orienteering Club (PAPO) at the National Orienteering Championships held in Nelson, over Easter. Juliet had an amazing weekend running in the W16 age group with a 3rd in the Middle Distance, a 4th in the Long Distance and a 6th in the Sprint.
In Rhythmic Gymnastics , Annabel Walker (Yr 11) was the Canterbury Champion in Level 9 late last term and placed 1st in the Cantebrury Secondary Schools competition. Scarlett Girvan, also Yr 11, also competed in the same event, placing 1st in Level 8. Great work from our gymnasts!
The National Age Group (Long Course) Swimming Champs was a successful week for both Grace Haydon (Yr 11) and Florence Nelson (Yr 12). Florence achieved a bronze medal in the 16 year girls' 100 butterfly, 4th in the 200 fly and 6th in the 50 fly. Grace placed 4th in the 15 year girls 50 back and 5th in the 200 back, plus a bronze medal with the Wharenui girls in the U15 medley relay. Outstanding work team!
A shout out to the Senior A water polo team on their successful campaign at the NZSS Premier Water Polo Championships held in Wellington during the break. The team performed outstandingly at this event, finishing in 5th place with some tight games against the top schools in the country. Great work team!
