The opportunities that exist for our rangitahi to be active never ceases to amaze, as does the level at which our wahine achieve. Check out the update on all things sport at Rangi which this week includes: adventure racing, orienteering, multisport, freeride skiing and cycling.
GET2GO CHALLENGE
The Rangi Ruru – Shirley Boys High School Adventure Race team had a fantastic day at the Canterbury Region Hillary Outdoors Get2Go Challenge on Monday, September 12. This event took place at The Groynes and at Lake Rua with 18 other teams from around Canterbury. The event is for teams of eight Years 9 and 10 students that compete together in orienteering, mountain biking, water and problem solving activities throughout the day.
The combined Rangi Ruru – Shirley Boys' High School team of Juliet Freeman, Sophie Sara, Vesper Woodfield, Sophie Maxwell, Tyler Lodge, Markus Jorgensen, Mac Smith and Lewis Monk all from Years 9 and 10, have only been running together since the beginning of winter 2022. With Violetta Dacre a fill-in for an absent Sophie Maxwell on the day, the team worked exceptionally hard for a strong orienteering section, followed by the best mountain bike ride and water activities section out of all teams on the day. Their ability to work together and have a lot of fun saw them also have a strong problem solving section which took them to a 4th place out of 19 teams competing. A fantastic result, well done team.
Thank you to Trisha Hopcroft (Rangi Ruru) and Jake Chalkin (SBHS) for supporting this team and for parents who were able to come out and help on the day. A huge thank you also to Violetta Dacre for filling in at short notice so the team could actually compete.
We have lots more adventure racing activities planned for the future, working into next year’s SISS Adventure Racing Champs and the Get 2 Go and Hillary Challenge events. If this sounds like something you might be into then get in touch and come and join us!

FREERIDE TOUR – success for Poppy Freeman and Ruby Hewitt!
Two Rangi Ruru skiers have had an epic winter season competing on the Freeride Tour in recent weeks.
Poppy Freeman (Year 9) achieved three Silver placings over the last few weeks competing in the Under 14 division:
- 2nd Piki Mountain Cardrona
- 2nd NZ junior freeride tour TC
- 2nd NZ Junior freeride tour Mt Olympus
Ruby Hewitt (Year 12) has continued to build on her success from last season and recently won all three stops of the New Zealand Junior Freeride Tour competitions. As a result Ruby was awarded a Wild Card to compete at the Junior World Champs in Kappl in January 2023. After COVID stopped the 2022 World Champs going ahead, we will have everything crossed for you Ruby that the 2023 event goes ahead!
CYCLING – TOP CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL 2022!
In case you haven’t heard the news – last week the Rangi Ruru Cycling Squad were awarded Top Christchurch Girls School and Top Overall School at the end-of-season prizegiving for the Christchurch Schools' Cycling competition.
It has been a fabulous season for the Rangi Ruru Squad which has seen them dominate the Christchurch schools' competition, also taking the Under16 and Under20 Team Time Trial titles. The results throughout the season cements our growing squad's reputation as one to watch out for in the future!
A massive thank you to Mr van Rossen and our coaching team Elyse Fraser, Ava Morrow, Georgia Kellow and Chloe Jenkins as well as to our co-captains Tessa Sheild and Grace Spurway for their support of the team throughout 2022.
Years 7&8 SPORT
Another term done and dusted and what a great term at that. This term students concluded their winter sport for 2022 and transitioned into “having a go” at some of our summer sport options. Registrations for Term 4 has now closed, and all students should be in their chosen sport chats by now.
This Tuesday we are celebrating all the learnings that students have gained throughout the past 5 weeks of our summer code “have a go” sessions. Students will be able to utilise their new/developed skills in a fun and bright event through participating in our very first inhouse summer tournament.
