Strike 4 the Climate

Rosetta Brown —

Next Friday, September 27 is the third global strike, with the goal to collectively encourage governments to take tougher action immediately, to stop climate change. This is an intergenerational event.

To recognise the significant threat climate change poses to future existence, the Sustainability Council encourages our community to stand in solidarity for urgent action on the climate crisis. Show responsibility for the future of our planet by attending the peaceful rally at 1pm next Friday in Cathedral Square. Encourage your siblings, friends, parents, grandparents and teachers, because the climate crisis is everyones issue.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has encouraged young people to mobilise societies to put pressure on governments across the world to take immediate action. World leaders head to the New York for the Climate Action Summit next week and he has requested they come "with concrete, realistic plans to enhance their nationally determined contributions by 2020, in line with reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45% over the next decade, and zero emissions by 2050".

The core demands of SS4C are that government: -Do everything in their power to limit warming to 1.5 degrees celsius. This involves passing into law an ambitious zero carbon act and having a comprehensive legally enforceable plans in place to half our carbon emissions by 2030 to ensure we meet agreed IPCC goal of zero emission by 2040.

  • Declares a climate emergency to acknowledge the magnitude of the climate crisis and the damage occurring in the Pacific region
  • Ceases all exploration and extraction of fossil fuels
  • Invests in building a renewable and regenerative economy

Rangi Ruru has enabled students to attend the Christchurch School Strike 4 Climate rally with their friends and families by ending school early on this day. There will be an opportunity for students to walk to Cathedral Square together with seniors from the Sustainability Council, however as this is an outside of school event, students are not able to provide supervision once at the rally.

In supporting the rally you will have a political voice and support these changes, however as well as having as having a voice, we strongly encourage our students to 'walk the talk' and take action as individuals. If three trees were planted for every person in the world currently, global warming would cease. One of our Rangi Sustainability goals is growing and planting 10,000 native trees in the next three years through our Eco Action initiative, Paper for Trees programme and in supporting the Drayton Reserve and Buxton Creek Regeneration Projects. One way you can make a difference today is to plant trees!
